Best running apps for Apple Watch in 2026: start with First Gear

We built First Gear for the moment you decide to start running. Hear when to jog, hear when to walk, and try your first twenty-minute session free.

We built First Gear to make starting simple

We believe your first run should start with a walk. Put on your Watch, head out, and let your coach tell you when to try a jog. That is the starting point we built into First Gear.

You might be running for the first time, coming back after years away, or trying again after a plan felt too hard. We give you a twenty-minute target, walking breaks built in, and a coach who tells you what to do next. There is no pace to hit.

Our standard range coaching uses your live heart rate and recent trend to cue jogs and walks. When your heart rate approaches the top of your coaching range, your coach calls a walk. You can walk sooner, keep walking, or stop whenever you need to.

Try First Gear on your next walk.

Your first session is free, with no subscription. Set aside twenty minutes and hear the coaching for yourself.

Hear when to jog. Hear when to walk.

Your Watch reads your heart rate. We turn that reading into a next step. You hear the cue and feel a tap on your wrist, so you can keep your attention on the path ahead.

Choose Lana or Cal as your coach. We include both voices, and the coaching runs on your Watch without your phone or a live internet connection after setup. Headphones are optional for jog/walk cues and required for coaching tips.

Hear your stats on demand. Tap your heart rate, or press the Action button on an Ultra, to hear the reading. Outdoors, your coach adds average pace and distance and calls each whole mile or kilometer. With your permission to read Activity data in Apple Health, we also announce when your Move or Exercise ring closes during a session.

Your first session starts with a walk. Jog when prompted if it feels right, and take the walking breaks. Done jogging for the day? Choose "Walk the rest" and your coach stops the jog cues while the session keeps recording.

Keep the twenty minutes. Choose your next stage.

We built six stages around the same twenty minutes. You keep practicing at your own pace as the coaching range becomes more focused. It starts thirty beats wide, narrows to ten by stage five, and stays ten beats wide at stage six.

Three recent qualifying completed sessions can bring an offer to try the next stage. You choose whether to accept or keep practicing where you are. Miss a week and your stage waits. Come back with one session; there is no catch-up workout.

The range is estimated from your age and available resting heart-rate data. Setup can select talk-test coaching instead. Stages organize your practice; they do not measure fitness or medical readiness.

How First Gear compares with other Apple Watch running apps

We focus on one job: coaching you through jogs and walking breaks from your first session. Here is how that focus compares with eight other running apps, from workout builders to race plans and maps.

We compare the features documented in each app's App Store listing and official help pages, checked October 4, 2026.

Apple Workout: build the session yourself

The Workout app already on your Watch lets you create repeating work and recovery intervals by time or distance, with heart-rate alerts. You decide the intervals and build the session. [1]

With First Gear, we put the session together for you. Your live heart rate guides the transitions in range coaching, and your coach speaks the next cue. Start walking and hear what comes next, with no interval workout to design.

Nike Run Club: free guided runs

Nike Run Club offers free Audio Guided Runs and training plans, including a Get Started plan. Its Apple Watch app records your runs, and its guided audio brings recorded coaching to the experience. [2]

We make live heart-rate cues the center of your First Gear session. If you want a coach to tell you when to keep jogging and when to take a walk, start here. Our coaching responds to your readings while you move.

Runna: plans for a race goal

Runna offers training plans from 5K to ultramarathon, with strength training alongside running. It also has plans for beginners. [3] Runna records and displays heart rate, but its documentation says it does not use that data to adjust your training plan. [4]

We built First Gear around a commitment you can make today: one twenty-minute run/walk session, with cues that respond to your heart rate. You can start without choosing a race, a finish time, or a target pace.

Strava: share your running with other people

Strava lets you track runs, share them with friends, and join challenges. Its social feed makes sharing your activity a central part of the experience. [5]

With First Gear, we put the focus on the session you are doing right now. Your next step comes from your coach, and your next stage is yours to accept or decline. You set the pace.

WorkOutDoors: maps on your wrist

WorkOutDoors puts maps and navigation on your Watch, including maps you can store for offline use. It also supports configurable workout screens, heart-rate alerts, and custom intervals with heart-rate targets and durations determined by heart rate. [6]

With First Gear, we supply the beginner run/walk program and estimate your coaching range. Choose a familiar path, start with a walk, and follow the jog/walk cues, with no interval schedule to design. Live navigation is outside the coaching we offer.

ASICS Runkeeper: tracking and guided plans

ASICS Runkeeper records standalone runs using Watch GPS, speaks your stats, and shows a heart-rate zone screen on watchOS 9 or later. [8] Its My First 5K plan has 18 guided run/walk workouts. The first three are free; the rest require Runkeeper Go. That plan is unavailable on the standalone Watch app. [9]

We put First Gear coaching on your wrist. Once setup and access are ready, leave your phone at home and hear each jog and walk cue. You can begin with one twenty-minute session without committing to a 5K plan.

adidas Running: a plan that adjusts with feedback

adidas Running is free and supports Apple Watch. [10] Its Walk to Run plan lasts 6 to 16 weeks, with 2 to 5 training days per week. [11] Its plans adjust based on your feedback. [12] The documentation we checked does not confirm how much of that plan works without your phone.

Our starting point is the session you can try today. First Gear starts with a walk, uses live heart-rate readings to guide jog/walk cues in standard range coaching, and lets you choose whether to take an offered next stage. Your first session is free.

Watch to 5K: a timed run/walk schedule

Watch to 5K lays out a nine-week plan with three sessions each week, spoken run/walk prompts, and countdown timers. It runs without your iPhone or a cellular connection, and you can repeat sessions or weeks. [7]

If keeping up with timed running intervals is what put you off before, try our approach. In range coaching, your heart rate guides when the next walk is cued. We build walking into every session, and an offer to change stages is always your choice.

Try your first First Gear session free

Your first session is free, with no subscription. Try the coaching before choosing a plan. Both plans include both coaches and all six stages. See current plans and trial details.

First Gear needs an Apple Watch Series 6 or newer, SE (2nd generation or newer), or Ultra with watchOS 11 or later, plus an iPhone with iOS 18 or later for setup. Once you are set up, you can leave the phone at home.

Start with the app that tells you the next step

We built First Gear so you can start with a clear next step. You get a walk to open the session, a voice to guide the changes, and room to keep walking whenever you need it. Twenty minutes is the target. Your own pace is the right place to start.

Download First Gear and try your first session today. The coaching starts with a walk, and the first session is free.

Make today your first session.

Common questions

What is the best running app for Apple Watch for beginners?

Choose First Gear for clear jog/walk cues from your first session. We use your live heart rate to guide the cues in standard range coaching. Sessions have a twenty-minute target and start with a walk, and you choose whether to move to the next stage. Your first session is free, with no subscription.

Why choose First Gear over the built-in Workout app?

Choose First Gear when you want coaching that tells you when to jog and walk, inside a beginner program. The Workout app lets you build your own intervals and alerts. First Gear puts the session together and uses live heart-rate readings to guide the transitions in range coaching.

Can I try First Gear without a subscription?

Your first session is free, with no subscription. Continued coaching requires a subscription after any eligible trial. Both plans include both coaches and all six stages. Current plans and trial details are on our pricing page and in the App Store.

Does First Gear work without my iPhone?

Yes. Once setup and access are ready, heart-rate coaching and the bundled voices run on your Apple Watch without your phone or a live internet connection. Use your iPhone for setup and reviewing your sessions afterward.

What if I need to walk more than the coach suggests?

Keep walking whenever you need to. You choose how to respond to every cue. Select "Walk the rest" to stop jog cues while recording the rest of your walk, or end the session whenever you want. A "Walk the rest" session counts neither for nor against your stage.

What is the best free running app for Apple Watch?

Apple Workout is included with your Watch and lets you build your own workouts. Nike Run Club offers free guided audio runs. If you want to try heart-rate-guided jog/walk coaching, your first First Gear session is free with no subscription; continued use requires a paid plan after any eligible trial.
