What is a masters athlete?
An age bracket, not a performance standard. The difference changes how you read the research.
In competition it is purely an age
Masters athletics is the branch of track and field for competitors aged 35 and over, run by World Masters Athletics, which World Athletics designates for the purpose. Competitors are sorted into five-year brackets from 35 to 39 upward, so an M40 is a man from his fortieth birthday to the day before his forty-fifth. [1]
Other sports draw their own line, and several draw it younger than athletics does. There is no single cross-sport age at which you become a masters athlete.
The part worth holding onto is what the category does not contain. There is no qualifying standard for most masters competition. You are not a masters athlete because you are fast. You are one because of your birthday.
In the research it means something looser
Exercise science borrowed the term and uses it more loosely, usually to mean an adult past about 40 who trains systematically. The people in those studies have often never entered a race.
The study most often cited for the claim that training protects muscle into old age describes its participants as high-level recreational athletes, aged 40 to 81, training four to five times a week. [2] Recreational. Not competitors.
The 2022 review of how fast aerobic fitness declines uses the same loose sense, and found that changes in training volume explained 54 percent of the variance in men. [3] Again, the variable is how much they kept training, not how fast they were.
Why the distinction changes how you read the studies
If masters athlete reads as elite, then every finding about preserved muscle and halved fitness decline sounds like it belongs to other people. Gifted people. People who were always going to be fine.
It does not. Strip the word back to what it means and those studies say something much plainer and much more useful: adults who kept training four to five times a week held onto things that adults who stopped did not. That is a statement about consistency, and consistency is available.
You do not need a race number to get the effect the research describes. You need to still be doing it in ten years.
Common questions
What age do you become a masters athlete?
In track and field, 35. That is the threshold World Masters Athletics uses, with competitors then sorted into five-year age brackets. Other sports set their own line, and several set it lower than 35.
Do you have to compete to be a masters athlete?
For the formal category, yes, it is a competition class. In the research literature the term is used more loosely for any adult past about 40 who trains regularly, and many of the people in those studies never raced.
Are masters athletes just naturally gifted?
The research points at consistency rather than talent. In a 2022 review of aerobic decline in masters endurance athletes, changes in training volume explained 54 percent of the variance in men. What separated them was how much they kept training.
